The beautiful city of Obra is located in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh State, which is surrounded by two rivers “Sone and Renu”.  By 1960 it was a backward and tribal place, Which was developed in 1967 for electric production. Until 1989, Obra was a tehsil in Mirzapur district. Mirzapur district was partitioned in 1989 and Sonbhadra was declared a separate district.  which is the second largest district today in the state. and since 1989, Obra became a part of Sonbhadra district and in 2019 it got the recognition of Nagar Panchayat area. The road distance from Varanasi to Obra is 135 km and the nearest railway station is in Chopan, which is about 13.00 km from Obra. Obra is known for electricity production and crusher (stone) industry. The Obra power generation plant consists of two power plants with power generation capacity of 1288 MW, Obra-A and Obra-B, development on the Obra-C power generation plant is also in progress, which is targeted to be completed by 2022. It will have two units of 660 MW which the other company is developing.

	Obra is 400 to 1,100 feet high above the Ganges river bed, which stretches between the Vindhya Mountains in the Sonbhadra district and the Sone and its tributary Renu River between the hills of Kaimur. It is about 13 KM from Chopan railway station and about 8 KM from nearest Shakti Nagar highway, the boundaries of Obra touch "Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh" and it is also very close to Jharkhand Pradesh. It is a beautiful place amidst many springs, small mountain rivers and lush green forests, which Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the country had dreamed of making Switzerland.
